COMPANY HISTORY

Imreco’s beginnings and evolution read like a fascinating chapter in a history book.

It was in the early 1900’s that the first stone was cast in what would later become Imreco Import. Inc.

Bela Iritz, a first generation jeweler in his native Hungary, was the original author of the company’s storied beginnings. He began a rich legacy, that wove itself through two families and several generations.

Imre Klauber apprenticed as a jeweler in 1940, at the age of 15. Imre’s wife’s grandfather was Bela Iritz. Their passion, individually and collectively would go on to impact several members of their extended families.

In1957, at the age of 34, Imre and his wife, both Holocaust survivors, fled the Hungarian revolution. They arrived in Montreal with a baby, five-dollars and an enduring passion.

After working for various companies, Imre Klauber set up shop in his home in Montreal’s Snowdon district. For 25 years it grew and flourished at that location.

Imre was a master model maker, designing jewelry by hand and selling it to the public. He was also a diamond expert, trained in the “old school”.

Imre’s youngest son Dave apprenticed with his father in the truest sense of the word. At 16, Dave began learning the family business. From sweeping floors and making coffee, Dave then progressed to polishing, model making and waxing. Later he specialized in diamond setting. Today, Dave Klauber is also a certified gemologist who enjoys “the underlying mystery in every piece.”

In 1986, Dave and his father began plying their trade together at the downtown Montreal building that remains the company’s headquarters today.

The company officially became known as Imreco in 1991, named after Imre Klauber who passed way in 1998. Today, the company’s president, principal owner and co-designer is Dave Klauber.

Imreco has grown to supply all of Canada and parts of the U.S. with an increasing clientele, importing its diamonds and precious stones from North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
